Dry Mouth: CBD can lead to a decrease in saliva production
Slight Lethargy: CBD can and does promote relaxation in animals, this is typically seen when first introduced to products containing CBD so your furry friend may seem a bit sleepy especially when first starting and typically tapers within the first few dosages. If your pet seems too sleepy, you can always adjust their dosage accordingly.
Diarrhea: If you have ever introduced a new supplement, food, or treat in your pet’s regimen then you are most likely aware of this possible side effect. This is why we always recommend starting at a low dose and gradually working your way up to the recommended typical full dose.
CBD is one of the many compounds contained in cannabis plants (hemp and marijuana) It stands for Cannabidiol and is cannabinoid produced by both hemp and marijuana plants. The potential benefits of CBD are Pain reduction, reduced inflammation, calming effects for anxious pets, and epilepsy which are the most common, but many others have been reported and are being currently studied.
No, But the cases that have been reported have shown that the products given to pets contained THC as well as CBD. THC is the compound that produces the “HIGH” effect for people and pets. THC is found in marijuana in high concentrations. CBD is found in high concentrations in the Hemp plant, which is the plant we use to produce our products.
CBD is an inhibitor of cytochrome P450 and has the potential to affect the metabolism of other drugs in the same way the grapefruit does. There is minimal clinical significance in most cases. (may be more prevalent in cases where the pet is already being administered anticonvulsants for seizure control) As always, you should consult with your vet before administration of any supplement whether it’s natural or synthesized.
As with any other drug or supplement, every pet and case are unique. What we typically see Is if it is being used for the calming effect, you will see effects within the first 30 minutes of the first dose. When it comes to pain and inflammation, the time range is typically between 3-14 days before you start to see improvements. (FYI, if the treatment is halted, so will the results) This is a long-term treatment plan.
We typically recommend placing the product directly in the mouth of your pet. If that is not an option then, placing the product on a treat would be second best and the last option would be in their food.
Our standard CBD formula contains full spectrum cold extraction cannabis oil, CBD isolate, and either organic vegetable glycerin or MCT oil and purified water.
If kept in a cool dark place or the refrigerator, it has a stable shelf life of approximately one year from the bottling date. (being the fact that this is typically a daily administration, each bottle would usually last between 1 and 4 months.
The short answer is yes, CBD products have been shown to be safe and well tolerated by pets. However, you should consult your vet prior to administration of any new supplement and or drug. Especially if your pet has any pre-existing condition or is on other medications.
For our standard pet CBD formula, we have found that .5-1 ml 1-2 x per day is a sufficient dose for generalized anxiety and low-level pain and inflammation. (this is just a simple guideline to get started as every pet and every case are unique)
